What is a short-term rental?

A short-term rental (STR), often referred to as a vacation rental, is a furnished home designed for temporary guests. Typical rentals are often referred to as "long term rentals" and usually have a contract period of 30 days or more, whereas a short term rental is usually used for much shorter stays. 

Currently the two most popular listing platforms for STR's are Airbnb and VRBO. They facilitate the transactions between the guests and homeowners, and often even take that a step further and collect taxes on the owners behalf (depending on the location of the home). 

STR's are a fairly new concept that has blown up in recent years thanks to the popularity of Airbnb and VRBO. It's a great way for homeowners and investors to be able to make a little extra money, however it requires more work. Also, in various cities it's becoming much more controlled, limiting the opportunity and profitability for some areas. So while it's still a great opportunity, it's important to stay on top of area specific regulations and taxation policies before deciding to become a host yourself.
